On January 22, 2024, Bill C-42 (An Act to amend the Canada Business Corporations Act) will come into effect, creating a publicly accessible beneficial ownership registry of privately held federally incorporated companies. This will require certain federal corporations to make public specific information regarding their beneficial owners. In recent years, several Canadian jurisdictions, including Ontario, have adopted similar legislation requiring “transparency registers” with the stated goal of improving transparency as part of the government’s efforts to combat money laundering, terrorist financing, and tax evasion.
